ABOUT
Norrie McCulloch is a singer-songwriter and award-winning visual artist originally from Ayrshire he currently lives and works out of of Stirling, Scotland. McCulloch's songs are a tangle up of folk, indie and country influences that manage to stay true to his Scottish roots, equating to a style that offers a welcome touch of originality and garnering critical acclaim with Americana UK naming McCulloch 'An astonishingly good songwriter', Maverick Magazine calling his sound 'Sublime indie-folk' and David Esson of Scottish Daily Mail describing songs as ‘Caledonia, Folk & Country combined perfectly’.
McCulloch's beginnings as a musician was as a busker on the streets of Glasgow, later going on to travel further afield with his guitar busking throughout Europe. He set up and was constant figure behind a weekly residency at the legendary Victoria Bar with band - 'The Wufniks' (later called - 'Dunghose') which featured: Craig Ward (dEUS), Glaswegian illustrator Adrian McMurchie, guitarist Bob Christie and Matt Harvey & Fozzy from folk band 'The Clachies'. More recently McCulloch was responsible for promoting the popular 'Fireside Sessions' across various venues in Stirlingshire. The debut album from McCulloch ‘Old Lovers Junkyard’ was released in 2014, followed by ‘These Mountain Blues’ in 2016, ‘Bare Along The Branches’ in 2017 and the ‘Townes Blues EP’ later that same year. A new album titled 'Compass' is due for release on May 31st 2019. He has collaborated regularly on recordings and live with multi instrumentalist Dave McGowan (Teenage Fanclub / Belle & Sebastian), Stuart Kidd and Marco Rea (The Wellgreen), Iain Thompson (live sound w/ Phosphorescent), Shane Connolly (Alasdair Roberts Band / Issho Taiko Drummers) and Iain Sloan (Wynntown Marshals) Aside from writing and recording music Norrie also has many years experience as a tutor of songwriting and visual art workshops to youth and community groups across Scotland. He composed the soundtrack to the ‘Look Out’ theatre production 'Hanging Tree' at Edinburgh Fringe Festival and his visual artwork has been commissioned for use within the Ken Loach feature film - 'Aye Fond Kiss' and the David Mackenzie film - 'Hallam Foe’. Since his debut album release in 2014 McCulloch has played shows in the UK and USA. He has secured slots at festivals including Belladrum, Celtic Connections, Doune The Rabbit Hole, SummerTyne, Festival 2018, Southern Fried and Glasgow Americana. He continues to work regularly on community based creative visual art and songwriting/music projects. VIDEO
